Expert advice for walkers at Strictly Parish evening

Kallie Rogerson (left) is presented with a Polar A300 Activity Trainer by Manx Telecom Marketing Executive, Marg McGee. The prize was donated by Intersport Isle of Man. Photo by Murray Lambden.

Manx Telecom Parish Walkers received some sage advice from a panel of experts at a ‘Strictly Parish’ evening. The event, held at Keyll Darree Education and Training Centre near to Noble’s Hospital, was compered by Kevin Walmsley and featured a panel including IAAF race walking judge Steve Taylor; physiotherapist Ben Scott; Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Matthew Biggart; former Parish Walk winner, Commonwealth Games competitor and now a coach, Graham Young; centurion walker and five times Parish Walk finisher Karen Lawrie; and Andrew Titley, a multiple Manx Telecom Parish Walk finisher who has also completed the Big 50 mile Walk in South Africa. They answered a wide range of questions from an audience comprising walkers of all ages, and ranging from novices to more experienced walkers aiming to complete the full 85-mile course.

Topics covered included training, nutrition, footwear and clothing, and a discussion about rules and regulations. Dr Dave Walker has prepared some important health advice on the risks of using anti-inflammatory drugs during the race which was discussed at the evening, and is also available on the Parish Walk website www.parishwalk.com

Everyone who attended the evening had their names entered into a free prize draw to win a Polar A300 Activity Trainer, generously donated by Intersport Isle of Man. Kallie Rogerson was the lucky winner and was presented with her prize by Manx Telecom Marketing Executive, Marg McGee.

Ray Cox, Manx Telecom Parish Walk Race Director, was also at the evening and commented: “We are delighted with the turnout and must thank everyone who contributed to a very worthwhile event – not least the panel whose expert advice will be a great help to walkers of all abilities as they prepare for this year’s race.”

The Manx Telecom Parish Walk takes place on Saturday June 18, starting at 8am at the NSC in Douglas. Anyone who enters before midnight on March 31 will receive a £5 discount on the entry fee. It costs just £35 if you sign-up before that date, and £40 from April 1 until the final closing date for entries on May 8. All entries must be made at www.parishwalk.com

Certificates will be awarded to all walkers who complete the full distance 85-mile route in under 24 hours. Sub 18 hour finishers receive a gold certificate, 18 to 21 hour finishers receive silver, and 21 to 24 hour finishers, bronze. For 2016, there will again be a competition for younger walkers aged 18 to 21 completing the 32.5 miles to Peel. There’s a Corporate Team Award with prizes donated by Manx Telecom for teams of four walkers who are all from the same Isle of Man based company and with no more than one walker who has previously completed the full 85 mile distance. And there’s an Overall Team category for four walkers which cannot include more than two who have completed the full 85 miles. In both of the team competitions the winners will be decided by the highest aggregate distance covered by all four members, and all participants in the team competitions must enter individually and include their team names.

A bit of hassle tonight. Whilst searching for the photo I found a problem with the finishers in 2014 appears in my database with different ID numbers in the finishers list from those in the main database. Think its fixed now but if you ever spot any bugs please let me know at murray@manxathletics.com. I'd rather find the problems now than after the event this year!

Sport, recreation and almost 7 and a half mile an hour walking for Gianni Epifani

Gianni Epifani, the former Island Games middle distance athlete, who also excelled at cycling, celebrates his 45th birthday today.

He entered the Manx Telecom Parish Walk in 2015 and although he "only" reached Jurby, as you would expect from the sports professional who works with a varied representation of the community, including Walk and Talk, for Manx Sports & Recreation, he does things properly.

On Saturday he smashed his 10km personal best with a time of 50 minutes and 35 seconds at the Manx Harriers open. If he carries on like this he could be a future Parish Walk winner.

The most important preparation for the Manx Telecom Parish Walk is to listen to advice from others. No better way than attending this tomorrow evening.

Strictly Parish (previously Walk Talk)

Strictly Parish seminar at Keyll Darree Education and Training Centre near to Noble’s Hospital
Expert advice on how to prepare for this year’s Manx Telecom Parish Walk is on offer at a special Strictly Parish evening on Tuesday February 23. At this time of year many walkers are starting to train in earnest for the big day on June 18, and this event allows anyone to get tips from a panel of coaches, physios and experienced walkers who answer questions from the audience. It’s being held at Keyll Darree Education and Training Centre near to Noble’s Hospital. Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Entry is free, and tea, coffee and biscuits will be served. The event will last around an hour and a half, and everyone who attends will have their names entered into a free prize draw to win a Polar A300 Activity Trainer generously donated by Intersport Isle of Man.
On the expert panel will be international race walking judge Steve Taylor; physiotherapist Ben Scott; Dr Matthew Biggart; coach Graham Young; Karen Lawrie who has finished the full 85 mile distance; and Andrew Titley, a multiple Manx Telecom Parish Walk finisher who has also completed the Big Walk in South Africa. Ray Cox, Manx Telecom Parish Walk Race Director will also be at the Strictly Parish evening, and commented, said: “Strictly Parish is an excellent opportunity to find out about training, nutrition, footwear, and to get tips from the experts on tackling the biggest walking challenge on the Island. The evening is aimed at all abilities, from novices getting ready to take part for the first time, to more experienced walkers who have set themselves new targets to achieve this year.”

10th year of Manx Telecom timing by SPORTident

Like most things that work well we take the electronic timing, that was first sponsored by Manx Telecom in 2007, for granted, It was ground breaking at the time - even the London Marathon abandoned their plans to text split times to followers.

Apart from the benefits for followers, families and the media on race day, it is great for me as a source of data.

For example, who knew that Michael George was the fastest ever between Maughold and Lonan churches?

Worth celebrating if only his friends could spell his name correctly.
